Richard Hannon, Son of four-time British champion trainer Richard Hannon Snr., spent a spell working at leading studs and stables in Australia before spending 12 years as assistant to his father. He took over the licence at Herridge on January 1, 2014 and sent out his first winner two days later when Unscripted captured a maiden at Wolverhampton.
Richard enjoyed a tremendous first season in 2014 finishing with 17 Group winners in Britain and a domestic haul of almost £4.7m. He scooped a Classic victory with Night Of Thunder in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas which was, in Richard's words, “a dream come true”. Hannon won 3 more Group One races including Newbury’s Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes with Olympic Glory and also hit the jackpot with his first Royal Ascot runner, Toronado, winning the G1 Queen Anne Stakes. Richard was crowned 2014 British Champion Trainer, an amazing feat for his first season as a trainer.
The Hannon team came up trumps again on 16 May 2015 when top miler, Night Of Thunder joined flat racing greats Frankel and Brigadier Gerard in completing the 2000 Guineas/Lockinge double. The 2014 2,000 Guineas winner edged out his stablemate, Toormore, by a neck giving their trainer Richard Hannon a 1-2 in The Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
Richard has gained the loyalty of top owners such as Sheikh Joaan Al Thani and Sheikh Fahad from Qatar and Sheikh Hamdan Al-Maktoum and Sheikh Manana from Dubai, bringing with them a string of high quality horses to the yard. His amazing enthusiasm and hunger for success will stand him in good stead as he makes every effort to retain his trainer's title in 2015. He is married to Jemima and has two children, Eliza and Jack. His Father Richard Snr, married to Jo, is still heavily involved.
